Susan wrote:
There´s an interview with Dave in the latest issue of the German FUZE Magazine, where he talks about writing/recording Bury Me In Philly.

Someone asked for an english translation, so I tried my best... Certainly not perfect, but here you go:

DAVE HAUSE
The City of Brotherly Love. That’s what Dave Hause’ hometown is also called, derived from the literal translation of the Greek word Philadelphia. Dave loves this city so much, that he, even if he moved away, wants to be buried there some day.

Dave, can you tell us something about the recording and writing process of „Bury Me In Philly“?

I´ve wrote a lot of songs, almost enough for four albums. Things got started when I played these songs for my brother Tim and he gave feedback. He liked the songs about leaving Philly for California and falling in love and the ambivalent feelings you have at a new place. He saw a storyline between those songs and he was a great help as a co-writer, what helped a lot to choose the right tracks for the album. The other key part was Eric Bazillian, we brought in to produce the album. When he heard the songs he immediately got where I come from and he offered himself to produce the album. It was incredible to work with him and William Wittmann as a co-producer. Both are very passionate, dedicated, experienced and damned talented. It was really wonderful to go this way together, a line like „I know I can do it but I don´t want to do it alone“ from „With You“  became a special meaning then.

What influence did Eric Bazillian have on the album?

Everything was pretty impressive. You know, when I was eight years old, my first rock´n´roll concert was a show of The Hooters and it blew my mind. I immediately knew that I wanted to be a musician. A local Philly DJ found out about that and initiated contact with their frontman Eric and it turned out he liked my records “Resolutions” and “Devour” very much. I invited him to a headline show in Philadelphia and it ended with us performing the Hooter´s song “And We Danced” together with my band. We stayed in touch and he liked the songs I wrote for “Bury Me In Philly”. When it was time to record them, it wasn´t easy to convince the producer I worked with at the time of my song selection for the album and soon after that we parted our ways. Instead, Eric made clear that he wanted to produce my material. Within twenty minutes we set the studio dates and started recording in September. All this had an enormous impact on the album. Eric brought on board his friend William Wittman as co-producer and both were really fantastic. They brought a flood of positive energy and made sure that the songs were produced and instrumented properly. It was great to see that these two people, with over four decades of experience were so convinced of my songs and my voice. It was a very grounding and encouraging experience.

Was the writing process different this time as it was on the first two records?

This album took a lot of time. In the phase of recording and releasing the previous album Devour, that came out in 2013, my life very much changed for the better. I fell in love. I moved to California. I found out how to write songs without being sad and still reveal my inner truth. I wrote two songs on this album together with our guitarist Mitchell Townsend and more than half of the lyrics with my brother Tim. On this album are the first songs created without the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Did you learn something during the recording process of “Devour” that you really wanted to realize on the new album?

You learn so much with every single record and the associated intensive contact with various people it would be an immense long list. Most important for me is being able to work together with people trustfully again and follow my own visions and instincts at the same time. For some reason I sometimes lose this ability and I have to learn it again and again.

In an interview with Ox-Fanzine you once said that being asked about your band The Loved Ones is like being asked about an ex-girlfriend. Do you still think so?

In some way yes, but it´s about an ex I’m still in love with, I often meet for dinner and spend a wild night together from time to time…

What´s the idea behind the title of the album?

The first song I wrote for this album was “Bury Me In Philly” and when I played it to Mitchell Townsend, he thought the title line should be more present: “It’s very powerful, you should repeat the words in the album closer.” When I was in Philly, William Wittman went even further: “You should rewrite this to a chorus, it´s a great line.” Actually I wanted to name the album “The Mermaid”, but it turned out that this is more suitable as a band name, so we are playing live now as DAVE HAUSE AND THE MERMAID. While “Bury Me In Philly” as the album title pretty much covers the feeling of the songs and their vibe. Eric and Tim agreed and it was fixed.

What did it mean to you to live in Philly?

Living there has made me to the human I am today. It’s a city for underdogs and working class people and everything is rough and permeated of a spirit of rebellion. My family lives here and I have spent my most formative years here. I love Philadelphia and would love to move back there.

New interview at York Calling:

"We interviewed American singer-songwriter Dave Hause to discuss his U.K. tour, previous punk and hardcore bands he has performed with and his new album."

https://yorkcalling.co.uk/2017/01/27/dave-hause/

Quote :
On the March tour I’m aiming to have played every song from Resolutions, Devour, and Bury Me In Philly over the course of the tour, because so many fans come to multiple shows. We have also been promising a band for so long, so I think it’s only fair to vary the setlist and play a lot of different material. I can’t wait.

YESSS! cheers

There´s a full page article in the latest issue of the German VISIONS Magazin. I won´t post a scan here. Just one interesting statement (translated from German): "Actually I wrote enough songs for three or four records. I even secretly recorded another album which won´t be released for now."

MUST READ: " DS Interview: Dave Hause Goes West and Gets Hopeful on “Bury Me In Philly” "

This is the best writing/interview I´ve read lately!

http://dyingscene.com/news/ds-exclusive-dave-hause-goes-west-and-gets-hopeful-on-bury-me-in-philly/

Quote :
“I have another whole record that’s already tracked, it just needs to be mixed.” There’s also another All Brights EP in the can and due for release this coming Spring, plus another EP worth of what Hause calls “post-Devour malaise,” and “what could end up being a new Loved Ones record.”

Dave talked with Ticketmaster about the current tour, read the interview here:

Honored that Dave mentioned Rankers & Rotters. I think this is the first time ever he did in an interview.

Don´t know exactly where to post this. I think I´ll just leave it here.

Quote :
A fine night to test what you know

At this point in my concert-going life, I’ve seen a lot of opening acts. Even if I wasn’t worried about getting a spot at the rail for the headliner, I’d still want to watch the openers. Most of them are a pleasant distraction from the fact that you’ve been on your feet for hours and have hours to go until the evening ends. A few are trials to be endured, where your eyes might glaze over with boredom or you might grit your teeth and desperately hope you stashed ear plugs in your pocket to drown out the noise. But rarer still are the times when you discover a new favorite musician. These bands, through some magic alchemy, capture your attention from the very first notes. Your jaw drops, your toes start tapping, your head starts bobbing and you realize after the forty-five minute set (which goes much more quickly than it normally does) that you’ve effectively just had your mind blown. It’s only happened to me twice, and one of those times was for Dave.
