PostSubject: Lyrical connections between songs   03.10.13 4:07

I mentioned this over in the favorite lyrics thread, and figured it would make a pretty decent thread of its own. I'm noticing that this is quite a bit more of a full concept album than I thought it would be, with a lot of inter song references and a closer that kind of wraps up the story.

I've only listened to the album in full twice because I haven't had too much free time recently, but I noticed one of these. In Autism Vaccine Blues, one of the lines is "I've got a lump in my chest, the bees are in my head" and then, in Same Disease, "I can quiet down the bees with just a couple sniffs"

Anyone else notice anything like this through the album? Its kinda cool and I think it would be neat to find a bunch of them. The last track is a great example.

That is really great!!!
I've got another one:

In AVB he sings "The gulf's on fire, full of plastic trash"
And in Before:
"I drift on this plastic sickening sea."

Great post!

I first noticed the lyrics connection when I listened to Benediction where there are a lot of references to the other songs. But I have to listen more closely to spot more similarities ...

The gulf, and in a more simple sense the sea seem to be huge recurring themes in the album. I can't remember off the top of my head which song but I'm pretty sure I heard the gulf mentioned a few more times too.

I'd say it's almost in every song Smile

Pretty much. It's a very thematic album, and I love it because of that. I can pretty much close my eyes and with a little bit of imagination feel like the album's a movie, which is awesome.

Another thing I've noticed a lot is the word "sickening", which he's been using a lot since The Loved Ones days.

My local record store is getting a copy in for me that I can pick up at midnight on Tuesday, I can't freaking wait!

This one hit me while I was walking around in the city today

You left me there. Just a memory. (Before)
I played a memory in my head like a symphony. (Becoming Secular)

Btw from the article I posted in the Devour background thread:
But above all, Devour is a record for lyric nerds. Through 12 tracks, Hause creates a loose narrative arc, bookended by opening and closing tracks that address the listener directly.
